The Green Gold of Yucatan

The chef will be pleased to show you the decorating of a three-storey wedding cake.

The tour continues along a minor country road to the remote village of Aké. The visit does not only include the mystical Maya site, but also a sisal factory: the machinery from the turn of 19th century still twines thick sisal cords – an interesting insight into the once so important processing of the “Green Gold”. Sisal or Henequen, used for packing and transport purposes of goods, was once the most important industry of the region and practiced in over 200 haciendas. The estate owners, called “Hacienderos”, enjoyed great wealth and fame.

Traveling on country roads we soon reach Izamal, the city of three cultures: Maya, Spanish and Mestizos. Dominating is the Franciscan convent built by Bishop Diego de Landa. It has the second biggest Portico (open court) of the world. Riding peacefully in a horse carriage through downtown Izamal gives you a different perspective of this sleepy town.

After returning to the Hacienda San José Cholul, recover with a dip into in the private pool. Indulge yourself and have dinner in your private garden, surrounded by the unique vegetation and the natural sounds of the cicadas.
