Day 2
City Tour Antigua

After a one hours drive we arrive at Antigua Guatemala, founded in 1543 and partially destroyed by several earthquakes in 1773. Antigua (a UNESCO World heritage site) is the former colonial capital of Central America. Today the city is considered one of the finest examples of urban planning in Latin America. The streets are lined with workshops of artists and craftsmen. Churches, convents and mansions recapture the glory of a city which was the capital of a Spanish colony for over 200 years. The designs are a reflection of tastes prevalent at the time. Around the Plaza Mayor (the Main Square) the principal church and state was erected: The Cathedral, The Palace of the Captains Generals and the City Hall. On our tour we will also visit the remains of a former convent.

Day 3
Boatride Lake Atitlán

In the morning the road leads through the Central Highlands and climbs to an altitude of 2600m. Arriving at Lake Atitlán we enjoy a boat ride over the jade-collared lake to the village of Santiago Atitlán, home of the Tzutujíl Maya. The first impression of souvenir commerce will soon be gone with the explanations of your tour guide on the particular history of this ethnic and the community. Especially in the local church you find a lot of details that point to an spiritually different syncretism, meaning the melting of traditional Maya Cosmo vision and the catholic church.

In the afternoon we arrive back at the northern lake shore at Panajachel. A short drive brings you to Santa Catarina and the Hotel.

Hotel & Room type Casa Palopó, Boutique Hotel

Day 4
Market Chichicastenango

In the morning we drive to the colorful village of Chichicastenango. Chichicastenango is one of the most important Maya communities belonging to the Mayan Quiché Ethnic. The open air market takes place twice a week and attracts foreign visitors in search of a nice souvenir as well as the local population. The market is more than just the commerce, it’s the day of socializing, visiting the doctor and other services.

As elsewhere the Spaniards built the catholic church over a Mayan Ritual Place. The stairs outside the house of god still belong to the ancient site and should be treating with a certain respect. Inside the church many locals are holding ceremonies to communicate with their forefathers, it’s a unique atmosphere.

In the afternoon we drive to Guatemala City.

After arrival in Flores we continue with our tour by land, heading North towards the famous Mayan site Tikal, which is one of the most impressive Mayan religious centers` excavated! Here towering pyramids poke above the jungle’s green canopy to catch the sun. Howler monkeys swinging noisily through the branches of the ancient trees as brightly colored parrots and toucans dart from perch to perch in a cacophony of squawks. After a guided tour via Complex “Q”, the North and Central Acropolis with its Main Square, as well as Temple IV and Mundo Perdido we enjoy our lunch at the local restaurant.
