Day 1
Arrival to Santo Domingo

Reception and welcome at the airport Las Americas. Transfer to the «Zona Colonial» of Santo Domingo. Rest of day at leisure to get to know the oldest city of the «New World». No one can visit the Dominican Republic without coming to the magical, historical, and romantic capital of Santo Domingo, called the «First City of the Americas» because it received royal recognition as a city in 1503 and because of all the "firsts" that happened here before they happened anywhere else in the «New World». Here you will find the magnificent Cathedral that dominates all others in the Americas, the first monasteries and first convent, first European fortress, first mint and treasury office, first hospital, first university, first European paved road. Santo Domingo was founded in 1496 on the east bank of the Ozama River by Bartolomé Colón, Christopher Columbus's brother, and was baptized New Isabela in honor of the Queen of Spain. Santo Domingo served as the base for all the Spanish expeditions to the recently discovered lands of the New World and as the central court of royal justice for all of Spain's growing colonies.

Option: Should you arrive in Punta Cana instead of Santo Domingo, a short air-taxi ride will bring you to Santo Domingo.
Included meals: none
Overnight: Hotel Sofitel Nicolas de Ovando, Santo Domingo
Deluxe Colonial Room

Day 2
Santo Domingo – Barahona

(Distance to travel 220 kilometers)
After breakfast prepare to admire the first city of the «New World» the way its inhabitants did 500 years ago and get bewitched by its secrets entrapped in the narrow cobble stone streets. The walking tour of the Colonial Zone will take you to the many historical buildings and sites of the city. The visit will include palaces, forts, museums, churches and plazas. You will visit among others the famous «Alcazar de Colon», the first Cathedral of the «New World», «La Torre del Homenaje», «La Iglesia de los Dominicanos» as well as the pedestrian zone of «El Conde». An optional lunch will be available in one of the city’s well known restaurants. After this you will also visit the modern part of the Capital, including the Presidential Palace and the Cultural Center with its National Theater. You will drive along the famous «Malecon» leaving the city towards San Cristóbal, the birthcity of the dictator Trujillo. Heading west you will pass the industrial towns of Baní and Azua, foundet at the outset of Spanish colonialisation. The coast curves along the Caribbean and it’s nominal centre is the city of Barahona, an old sugar-processing capital that has seen better days. On the way you will be passing the southern foothills of the «Cordillera Central» draped with deciduous greenery and the pretty rolling hills that separate the two towns. Large sugar-cane cultivations are to be found in abundance in this region. Azua was established in 1504 by the future conqueror of Cuba Diego Velázquez and Mexico conquistador Hernán Cortés served as its mayor. The road leads towards the mountains and through a dry and desertlike area full of cactus and agave. You will reach the provincial capital of Barahona in late afternoon. It’s been said that the famous pirate Cofresí was hiding in this region.

Included meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Hotel Casa Bonita, Barahona
Deluxe Room

Day 3
Lake Enriquillo

(Distance to travel 210 kilometers)
Join us today for a fullday excursion to discover the National park of «Isla Cabritos». This park hosts the 200 km² Enriquillo lake, which is 42 kilometers long and 12 kilometers wide. The lake is 45 meters below sea level, its water three times more saltier than the sea. A boatride from the village of La Descubierta takes you to an enourmous bird sanctuary filled with flamingos and hundreds of other tropical birds, which collectively form an unforgettable multicoloured spectacle. You will also see the American crocodiles that inhabit this part of the lake. More than 400 crocodiles reproduce there, and spend their day around that corner of the lake where a cold river meets with the salty lake. In the centre of the lake, there is Cabritos Island, a sandy island covered with cactus where you find the half-tamed rhinoceros iguanas, birds and scorpions. The climate is very arid and the average rain is the lowest of the whole country. After exploring the island you return by boat to the shore and will have an excellent pick-nick lunch. In the afternoon, you will climb to the Taïnos Cave «Las Caritas», where you will have an amazing panoramic view over the lake and the mountains of Bahoruco. The drive circles around the lake until you reach Jimani - the border with Haïti - with its typical market in the village of Malpasse. On the way back to Barahona, you’ll stop in Duverge, to swim in its famous natural swimming pool.

Included meals: Breakfast and pick-nick lunch
Overnight: Hotel Casa Bonita, Barahona
Deluxe Room

Day 4
Leisure day at Casa Bonita

Enjoy the full day at your leisure at the tropical lodge Casa Bonita. The hotel sits on a hilltop with an impressive view of the Caribbean Sea, nestled within a vast tropical forest surrounded by rivers and mountains. For your activities the following optionals are included:

Optional: Fullday excursion to Bahía de las Águilas
(Distance to travel 210 kilometers)
Come and discover the National Park of «Jaragua», known as the biggest of the Dominican Republic, and its marvelous beach. «Bahía de las Águilas» is the most pristine beach in the entire Dominican Republic. The beach has the name of a bird which is living there permanently, the eagle. It is also one of the hardest to get to, in the middle of nowhere. Getting there is half the adventure, but the payoff is out of this world. To get to it, we will travel along the road to Pedernales and turn to Cabo Rojo where the land is literally red and surreal against the larimar-blue water of its shallow beach. We will end up in a tiny fishing community called Las Cuevas. The people here have built their homes into the caves of the cliffs in an effort to stay cool in the oppressive heat of the area. A short boatride will bring you to «Bahía de las Águilas». The sea is really calm and a light wind will help you not to suffer too much of sun and heat. Be an explorer for one day, of this place entirely ecological, natural and totally unspoiled by human buildings. You can observe more than 130 species of birds, 76 are living permanently on the bay, 10 are endemics and 47 are migrants The beach is completely unspoiled with absolutely no facilities. Lunch is a fresh fish feast and will be served either directly on the beach or upon return to Las Cuevas.

Included meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Hotel Casa Bonita, Barahona
Deluxe Room

Day 5
Barahona – Puerto Plata

Today you’ll be leaving the southwestern part of the Dominican Republic to head up north to the Amber Coast. A short taxiride will take you to the domestic airport of Barahona. Scenic flight over the Cordillera Central with views over valleys and the highest point in the country the Pico Duarte. The plane then descends over the Cibao Valley, rich for their farming and tobacco cultivations to the airport of Puerto Plata. Short transfer to Playa Dorado to the first member hotel of Small Luxury Hotels in the Dominican Republic. Rest of day at leisure to explore the surroundings of the area.

Those who visit «La Costa Ámbar» will find that its menu of activities is as varied as its topography. At the northwestern corner of the country lagoons rest peacefully amidst mangroves and thick vegetation, mountainous tropical forests reach to blue skies, and arid cliffs fall steeply into the ocean’s breakers. When Christopher Columbus made his second journey to the «New World» in 1493 he founded the second European settlement on this stretch of coastline at «La Isabela» in the northwest. After the miserable failure of «La Isabela», Columbus and his men moved to Santo Domingo and the north coast became mainly an import-and-export shipping yard for hundreds of years. But the mountainous tropical forests with no real passageways caused the area to be secluded from the rest of the country and unsettled for many years. Tourists didn’t even start visiting this region until the late 1900s.

Included meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Hotel Casa Colonial, Puerto Plata
Junior Suite Oceanfront

Day 6
Santiago de los Caballeros

Removed from the lazy beach towns, this lush region highlights the biodiversity of the country, featuring ranches, vegetable and fruit farms, twisting mountain roads, crashing waterfalls, rushing rivers, and crisp, fresh air. The area is abundant with produce ranging from potatoes, coffee, tobacco, and vegetables to some not-so-typical fruits such as strawberries and apples. Santiago is the second most important city and a cultural and artistic hub where folklore meets modern art. During the city tour you will be seeing the impressive Monument of the Restoration of the Republic. It is a landmark form where both the old and new cities can be admired. A short ride through the the old city will bring you to the center square where you will visit the Santiago Cultural Center gallery. Optional lunch in one of the many restaurants around center square. Your visit to Santiago will conclude with a guided tour of the Centro León. It is the country’s finest museum, housing art, anthropological, and cultural exhibitions. It also hosts artistic seminars, workshops, film festivals, and music performances. There are three main-building sections of the museum: contemporary art, a temporary exhibit room, and a Dominican exhibit that focuses on the country’s ecology, history, and culture. The museum was founded by the León Jimenes family, one of the most successful families in the Dominican Republic. They built their fortune in the tobacco, beer, and banking industries.
